The History of Westin's

Westin's Marine Center has a long history of serving the South Shore's boating needs.

Long before the current yard was established, Doug Westin began as an apprentice boat builder to Sam Jorgensen. In late 1949, Doug purchased property on the corner of Terry Street and River Road and built his first boat there - a Westin Sports 19.

On April 4, 1951, Doug Westin purchased Gerry's Boat Basin on River Road from Joseph Gerry and changed the name to Doug Westin's Boat Shop. The property included a building that was used by the Sayville Yacht Club in the 1930's and later was Doug Westin's summer family home.

The yard was much bigger than the Terry Street boat shop. Jim March, who worked at both locations, remembers that the Terry Street shop continued to build smaller "kit" boats and the new Westin's Boat Shop was reserved for larger projects, boat hauling, and storage.

In 1957, Doug Westin's Boat Shop purchased the property south of the marine railway from Ernest Mukelwitz and created the present day yard which is just under two acres. The railway boat hauling ramp was updated and a modern travel lift was added.

During the 1960's, Doug continued to improve upon his boat yard with an expanded boat basin and the addition of several buildings for storage.

Over the next few decades, modern amenities and safety features were added to Westin's Boat Shop including removing underground fuel tanks and adding above ground fuel tanks, constructing new bulkheads, performing permitted dredging, and adding electrical and water pods.

In 2012, Kenneth Stein III purchased Westin's Boat Shop and renamed it to Westin's Marine Center - preserving the Westin name with its long history.
